Reading and Writing Numbers
Now that you understand place and value, you can read and write numbers! You will use what you know about place and value to read and write numbers in three different ways:
STANDARD FORM
WORD FORM
EXPANDED FORM
WORD FORM
EXPANDED FORM
Standard Form
STANDARD FORM (or Standard Notation) is probably the way you write numbers most of the time. When writing a number in STANDARD FORM, you use digits 0-9. Remember, when writing numbers in standard form, a comma is used to seperate each group of three digits. The following numbers are in STANDARD FORM:
86
35,827
439
320,064
35,827
439
320,064
WORD FORM
When you read a number aloud or write a number using letters, this is called WORD FORM. Knowing the PLACE of the digits within a number will help you read or write numbers in WORD FORM. When you see the comma between the thousand and hundreds place within a number, this tells you to say the word thousand. Notice how the following numbers are written in WORD FORM:
86: Eighty-six
35,827: Thirty five thousand, Eight hundred twenty-seven
409: Four hundred, nine
302,064: Three hundred two thousand, sixty-four
35,827: Thirty five thousand, Eight hundred twenty-seven
409: Four hundred, nine
302,064: Three hundred two thousand, sixty-four
Expanded Form
The last way to write numbers is called EXPANDED FORM. When writing numbers in EXPANDED FORM, write the number as a SUM of each digit's value. Take a look at the numbers written in EXPANDED FORM:
86 = 80 + 6
35,827 = 30,000 + 5,000 + 800 + 20 + 7
409 = 400 + 9
302,064 = 300,000 + 2,000 + 60 + 4
35,827 = 30,000 + 5,000 + 800 + 20 + 7
409 = 400 + 9
302,064 = 300,000 + 2,000 + 60 + 4
